Someone had to

I filed a Complaint against my hometown and some of its prominent and powerful people because someone had to.

We hear that all the time, don’t we?

“Someone should do something about that.”

Since I’m trained as a lawyer, my “something” involves knowing just enough about the law to bring a case against people who, I allege, did something harmful when they made up lies and shared those lies with others.

Americans care about their reputations, and we’ve decided, in American law, that people can sue for money if someone harms their reputation.

But for me, it’s not about the money.

It’s about that bench: the one that sits on town property, right outside the police station, memorializing a rapist.

People in positions of power often behave badly; rarely are they held to account.

Until someone does something.
